Can essential oils help with flu or other virus?
Some research has stated that essential oils may help prevent the flu virus, though more research may be necessary. In a study, published by The American Journal of Essential Oils and Natural Products, researchers looked at how essential oils might impact certain types of flu virus. Read the study here
According to the authors of the study, ingredients in the following essential oils have shown some antiviral activity.
- Red Thyme
- Cinnamon Leaf
Some other studies have been done and shown that tea tree, lemon balm, rosemary and other essential oils have a positive effect in reducing flu symptoms and activity. However, the findings do not suggest that essential oils can be used to cure or treat flu or any other virus activity.
There are two methods for using essential oils: application to the skin and inhalation.
When applying an essential oil to the skin, always mix with a carrier oil beforehand. Some examples of carrier oils include natural vegetable or nut oils. Jojoba oil, olive and almond oils are some oils you can use for dilution. You can also use distilled water or witch hazel to dilute essential oils. After diluting an essential oil, a person may apply it to the skin or add it to bath or beauty care products.
For inhalation, essential oils may be added to hot water to inhale the vapors, or just use a room diffuser. Inhaling eucalyptus may help ease congestion and assist breathing easier.
It is not safe to ingest essential oils and children should not use them in any way, as serious reactions have occurred.
* Consult a doctor before using essential oils for any medical purpose.
